There is no neo-oogenesis in the adult mammalian ovary.

چکیده
In 2004 and 2005, Johnson et al. published two very provocative studies (1, 2), in which they claimed that in the adult mouse ovary, neo-oogenesis takes place and originates either from the ovarian surface epithelium (OSE) (1) or from the bone marrow (BM) via circulating blood cells (2). These studies were provocative since they challenged the long-held view that mammals are born with a finite number of eggs that declines with ageing. Consequently, an intensive discussion has developed among experts in the field, some of whom are proponents of neo-oogenesis, while others are opponents (Table 1). Neo-oogenesis is a very complex issue that has led to many questions. The aim of our lecture is to explain why we believe that spontaneous neo-oogenesis does not take place in the adult ovary by addressing three of these questions.

Germ stem cells in the mammalian adult ovary: considerations by a fan of the primordial germ cells.
At or early after birth, mammalian ovaries are filled with primordial follicles each composed by an oocyte blocked at the end of prophase I surrounded by a single layer of granulosa cells. The doctrine that female mammals are born with a finite number of oocytes fated to be exhausted with the age has been challenged by recent results claiming that new oocytes can be continuously formed in the p...
متن کاملFurther characterization of adult sheep ovarian stem cells and their involvement in neo-oogenesis and follicle assembly
BACKGROUND Stem cells in the ovary comprise of two distinct populations including very small embryonic-like stem cells (VSELs) and slightly bigger progenitors termed ovarian stem cells (OSCs). They are lodged in ovary surface epithelium (OSE) and are expected to undergo neo-oogenesis and primordial follicle (PF) assembly in adult ovaries. The ovarian stem cells express follicle stimulating horm...
متن کاملStem Cell Interaction with Somatic Niche May Hold the Key to Fertility Restoration in Cancer Patients
The spontaneous return of fertility after bone marrow transplantation or heterotopic grafting of cryopreserved ovarian cortical tissue has surprised many, and a possible link with stem cells has been proposed. We have reviewed the available literature on ovarian stem cells in adult mammalian ovaries and presented a model that proposes that the ovary harbors two distinct populations of stem cell...
متن کاملReinterpretation of evidence advanced for neo-oogenesis in mammals, in terms of a finite oocyte reserve
The central tenet of ovarian biology, that the oocyte reserve in adult female mammals is finite, has been challenged over recent years by proponents of neo-oogenesis, who claim that germline stem cells exist in the ovarian surface epithelium or the bone marrow. Currently opinion is divided over these claims, and further scrutiny of the evidence advanced in support of the neo-oogenesis hypothesi...
متن کاملOvarian adult stem cells: hope or pitfall?
For many years, ovarian biology has been based on the dogma that oocytes reserve in female mammals included a finite number, established before or at birth and it is determined by the number and quality of primordial follicles developed during the neonatal period. The restricted supply of oocytes in adult female mammals has been disputed in recent years by supporters of postnatal neo-oogenesis....
